Galena's oldest house, Dowling House, was built in 1826 by John Dowling. Built of limestone, it was once the only trading post in the city. The Dowling House was equipped with primitive living quarters and hosted many fur traders in years past. Tour guides provide a complete history of the development of the City of Galena and Dowling House while you browse through quaint artifacts from the early nineteenth century.

A short walk across Spring Street bridge you will find Depot Park located between the tracks and Galena River. Enjoy a picnic with the river as your backdrop, or hit the Galena River Trail. A scenic 8.8 mile (one way) trail along the Galena River, just minutes from downtown Galena. The hard-surfaced finely crushed rock trail is perfect for hiking, biking, cross country skiing or a simple stroll. It features beautiful views of the Galena River and towering bluffs.

Connecting Main Street and Grant Park, enjoy a walk across the pedestrian bridge and take in some of the best views of Galena.

Scale the Green Street stairs and explore the upper streets of Galena which include U.S. Grant's first home, Old Cemetery Park and the stately building overlooking Galena which originally served as the high school.
